Luke 4:24-30:
The people listening to Jesus in the temple are initially impressed by his preaching. But then a question is posed concerning his identity seemingly meant to caste suspicion. The acclaim turns to rejection. Jesus moves on.
I am learning more and more each day to trust in your every word. Thank you for the grace to hear your truth. Show me the way to live it.

Luke 13:1-9:
Jesus calls the people to repent and reform their lives now since they do not know when they will die and face judgment. Jesus cites two examples of unexpected death to make the point. Even though their death may not be imminent it will happen.
Two steps forward followed by one step back is the story of my life. Thank you for being a faithful companion on this journey.

Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24a:
The genealogy of Jesus that precedes today’s Gospel establishes Jesus’ place within the tradition of the Jewish people. It is Joseph who by his obedience to God’s messenger ensures that all that has been foretold would take place.
St. Joseph, you teach us fidelity and humility. Your quiet strength sets God’s glory into motion. Pray for us.

Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46:
Just as the landowner sends out his servants to work in the vineyard, God sends the prophets to prepare the way. They are rejected. The master sends his only son, expecting that he will be received well. He is not. God sends his only Son and though rejected and killed, Jesus, the cornerstone, opens the doors to God’s kingdom.
Through the stories of Joseph and the son of the vineyard owner, we are led to the story of God’s Son, which ends in triumph because God loves the world he created.

Luke 16:19-31:
The rich man is oblivious to the needs of the man at his door. How can this be when the man’s suffering is so obvious? This is powerful example of the sin of indifference for which the one will be harshly judged. His appeal to Abraham is too little too late. It is the man who had absolutely nothing in his earthly life yet is carried to heaven by angels where he will have it all.
I pray to be a good steward, to be aware of the needs of others and to share willingly my time, talent and treasure. St. Patrick, pray for us.

Matthew 20:17-28:
Jesus has just told his disciples for a third time in explicit detail what lies ahead. Neither the mother nor her sons, nor the other disciples understand. To be great in God’s kingdom requires humility not power.
You lived and died in service to others. Let your example guide me each day.

Matthew 23:1-12:
Jesus warns the disciples and crowds gathered to avoid the ways of the scribes and Pharisees. They do not practice what they preach. The place religious burdens on the people without helping them understand. They are greatly lacking humility, calling attention to themselves by their words and actions.
I pray that my words and actions lead people to you. Give me the grace to serve humbly.

Luke 6:36-38:
After having addressed love of enemies, Jesus speaks to his disciples about compassion. They are not to judge or condemn but to enter the suffering of others. They are to forgive all offenses. God will reward their willingness to do so.
Condemning others for what they might have done to me separates me from you. Please heal me and help me to be compassionate.

Luke 9:28-36:
In today’s Gospel, Jesus, Son of God, and Son of Man, is revealed. The appearance of Moses and Elijah is a sign that Jesus is the fulfillment of the expectations of the Hebrew people. Sadly, the disciples fall asleep, and Peter wants to remain in the moment. They do not yet understand.
Through word and sacrament, you reveal so much to me. I’m listening to you.

Matthew 5:43-48:
The focus of the final antithesis from Jesus’ sermon is about loving the unlovable and loveable alike, enemies as well as friends. God’s love is not limited. The sun rises and the rain falls on both the good and bad.
Though I am challenged by your ways, O God, I know in my heart that you call me to what is right and just.
